I never thought I would write memoir. My life story seemed too average and uninteresting for a book.
Memoir was the one genre I expected to avoid in my writing career.
And then I saw Marion Roach Smith speak on memoir at a writing event. It changed my entire perspective.

One of the things I hate hearing the most from people is the phrase, “you got lucky” (or “she/he got lucky”). It drives me absolutely up-the-wall crazy.
Because there is no such thing as luck. At least not in the way most people think of it.
Luck isn’t something that happens outside of you. It’s not random. It’s not something you don’t play a part in.
You set yourself up for luck.
Luck gets created by the thoughts you think, beliefs you have, feelings you feel, and actions you take in your day to day life. It’s your choices, your willingness, your intention that creates luck.

You KNOW what’s holding you back. You KNOW what you’re letting stand in your way. You KNOW where you’ve been giving your power for who knows how long.
It’s just that you’re not willing to admit it to yourself.
Not yet willing to do the hard thing of facing into the fire and dealing with what needs to be dealt with, or walking away from what needs to be walked away from. Not yet willing to give yourself full permission to forgive what has been and do and become what you know is meant to be.
You’ve been hiding. Playing small. Dimming your light. Pretending like you’re not really who you know you actually are.
And the funny thing is, deep down, you also know you have what it takes.

Here are some important truths every human needs to know: Your dreams and desires aren’t random. They were given to you for a purpose–because they’re meant for you.
Life is a co-creative dance with the Universe (you can also call it God, source, higher power, whatever fits for you). One where you decide and the Universe shows you the way. Where the Universe handles the energetic things and you act it out in the physical.
The dreams and desires you have were given to you by the Universe because it wants to experience those things through you. ‘Cause you are the connector between the energetic realm and the physical reality.

There was a time when I very rarely allowed myself to write fiction.
Growing up, writing fiction was my go-to. It was the thing I loved. It was the thing that most inspired me and made me dream bigger.
I spent hours writing fiction as a kid. I even wrote a 120-page novella in three days when I was 13.
In college (and afterward), I took every fiction writing class I could get my hands on. I read books about it to no end.
But as an adult, I rarely let myself write any fiction.
